
Duggan is best known for three terms as Detroit mayor following the city’s bankruptcy era, and for a long public-sector career that includes serving as Wayne County Prosecutor (2001–2004). He has positioned his governor run as a “neither party” alternative in a swing-state race.

Duggan was born in Detroit and attended Detroit Catholic Central High School. He earned both his undergraduate degree (1980) and law degree (1983) from the University of Michigan.
Before becoming mayor, his public career included roles in Wayne County government and as the elected Wayne County Prosecutor. His mayoral elections (2013, 2017, 2021) made him one of the longest-serving modern mayors of Detroit.
Duggan married Dr. Sonia Hassan in a family ceremony in Florida in September 2021, according to a statement from the Mayor’s Office. The statement said they returned to Detroit after a brief honeymoon.
